Dr. Aaron Lewis (Governor Candidate for Connecticut) speaks On the debate- “Why Debate Matters?”

So, when I was a kid, I remember Loomis Chaffee and Kingwood Oxford holding debate competitions. It was great, much like watching any other high school sport, basketball, football, or baseball. Today, we have schools like Greenwich High School that won debate competitions within the past five years. Several schools throughout Connecticut have long been known for debates. Debates were never frowned upon. Heated debates and dialog were exciting and healthy.

Our American republic was founded on a set of beliefs that were tested during the Revolutionary War. They debated on things like are all men created equal? Do we have fundamental rights given to us by God? Should there be freedom of religion and freedom of speech or a free press? What is due process of law? And why should citizens have the right to assemble peacefully?

Debating and open dialog made America a great nation, as many other countries closed off all avenues to debate. Debate is and always will be that unique element that gave our country a cutting edge over all nations who found little to no value in the “people’s voice.”

Over the past two years, we’ve seen our nation succumb to the pressure and undue influence of those who do not respect debate from people with varying opinions and ideas. We’ve seen entire networks shut down because people think differently or may have a different outlook or take on a particular matter. While some people may not think much about it, it’s scary when we close a discussion on anything. Debate should always remain on the table. That’s how we grow and develop. Everything should be open to reasonable debate and dialog.

I’ve seen people canceled because their opinions or convictions differed from the so-called “ruling class.” I mean, it’s becoming scary. Since 1960 we’ve had primary political debates; however, only two sides, only two political parties, have ever been heard. Why is that? What are people afraid of? Are we fearful of third parties and minor parties being heard? Why are the voices of the people being suppressed?

When debates exist, the people thrive. When people are shut off from debating, tyrannical government and mass confusion spread like wildfire.
